The City of Red Deer Civic Yard and Transit Garage plays a vital role in the town’s transportation system and it was identified that additional space was needed to maintain performance.
The decision was made to demolish some of the existing operational facility to incorporate the new building expansion. Our team thoroughly reviewed the current facility and its record drawings, to ensure a seamless integration of the new 18,000 square foot addition. Architectural materials were carefully selected to match the aesthetics of the existing facility, ensuring a seamless connection between the two buildings.
Within the scope of the project, we encountered various complexities that demanded careful attention. The project presented the challenge of a significantly constrained worksite. The construction area was slightly larger than the footprint of the new facility itself. It was crucial for us to meticulously manage and coordinate all construction activities within these boundaries. In addition, a critical aspect involved studying and accommodating the bus turning radius to ensure optimal maneuverability to prevent any contact issues between the buses and the facility. Our focus extended to achieving adequate overhead clearances and driving slopes, guaranteeing that the buses could operate without encountering obstacles or bottoming out.
The presence of City transit and public works access roads on all three sides of the construction site added another layer of complexity, necessitating thorough planning and coordination to maintain smooth traffic flow. Through direct communication and collaboration with the facility staff, we actively ensured that the City of Red Deer operations continued uninterrupted and resulted in a successful facility.
